Stuart family papers, 1854-1887.

The diaries of the Stuarts document the history of Montana, experiences in California, 1854-54, traveling across the Plains, 1857, 1866, hunting and fishing in Deer Lodge country, 1867, an 1873 trip to Yellowstone National Park, and staking a cattle ranch, 1880. F. H. Burr's diary notes trips from Fort Owen to Salt Lake City and return to the gold diggings. A. B. Henderson's diary records an 1866 Yellowstone expedition and prospecting in the Snake and Wind Rivers and in Yellowstone country, 1867-73.

Granville Stuart was born August 27, 1834, in Clarksburg, Harrison County, Virginia, to Robert Stuart and Nancy Currence Hall. He was the second of five children. Samuel Thomas Hauser (1833-1914), born in Kentucky, moved to Missouri in 1853 and became an engineer. He was a member of the Yellowstone Expedition of 1863 and the 1870 Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition to the Upper Missouri. Granville Stuart was born in Clarksburg, Virginia (now West Virginia) on August 27, 1834, and was the son of Robert and Nancy (Currence) Stuart. James was born in the same place on March 14, 1832. Granville and James also had two younger brothers Samuel and Thomas. The family, of Scottish origin, came to the United States in 1775 and is identified with the development of Virginia. Frederick H. Burr served as engineer under Lieutenant John Mullan on Isaac Stevens's survey expeditions in Montana beginning in 1853. Following a survey expedition with Mullan to Salt Lake City, Burr brought 400 head of cattle and settled in the Bitterroot River Valley area in 1856, married a sister of Granville Stuart's wife Aubony, a Shoshoni, and in later years became sheriff of Deer Lodge County, Montana.
